Casa dos Bicos / José Saramago Foundation

4.5 ·

Discover Casa dos Bicos, the diamond-fronted house now home to the José Saramago Foundation. See the Roman-era ruins downstairs, then climb up to the author's exhibition.

📖

Full description

Casa dos Bicos was built in the early 16th century and is named for the spiked, diamond-shaped stones on its facade, an Italian-influenced design that survived the 1755 earthquake. Today it houses the José Saramago Foundation, dedicated to the Nobel Prize-winning author's life and work.

The free ground floor displays archaeological finds from the site going back to Roman times, while the upper floors hold the Saramago exhibition requiring a ticket. Reviewers call it small but fascinating, especially for Saramago readers.

About 30 minutes is enough.

Reviews

The exterior is great. A historic survivor of the 1755 earthquake & a standout property in Lisbon. I also went into the free ground floor exhibition, which in comparison, I thought was rather dull.
