Church Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha

4.7 ·

Pause at Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha and study its surviving Manueline facade. Step inside to see the Baroque altar and sit for a quiet moment.

📖

Full description

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha was rebuilt in 1770 after the earlier church on the site, dating from 1534, was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. The most celebrated feature is the original Manueline facade, which survived the disaster and is reason enough for many visitors to stop.

Inside, a quiet Baroque interior has a large altar and a pleasant colour scheme, with space to sit and reflect. Entry is free and a visit takes around 15 minutes.

Opening hours include a midday break.

Reviews

Peaceful, charming and with a beautiful colour scheme inside, the church also features a large Baroque style altar, as well as a quiet place to sit and reflect. The highlight for me was the incredible ceiling, with pastel shades highlighting the crisp white plaster designs & artwork
