Climb to the Citadel on Gellért Hill for one of Budapest's defining outlooks. Walk the fortress walls, take in the Danube panorama and step into the museum to learn why the fort was built.

📖

Full description

Built by the Habsburgs in the wake of the 1848 Hungarian Revolution, the Citadel sits at the summit of Gellért Hill and today works as a viewpoint, open-air terrace and small museum rather than a military site. The walls and bastions can be explored freely, and the interior exhibition, which comes with an audio guide, covers the fortress and the city's history.

Reviewers single out the panorama over the river and bridges, and note the climb up from the riverbank is moderate rather than easy. Morning and early evening light suit it best.

Reviews

Amazing view, we climbed up all the way with stairs and it's worth it. So many good vantage points for pictures and viewing. Many benches to have a break. On top there are food and drinks that you can get. Favourite part of my trip!
