Roman Forum of Athens (Roman Agora)

4.5 ·

Wander into the Roman Agora, Athens' marketplace from the time of Roman rule. Look down on the ruined columns and the octagonal Tower of the Winds, then continue into the nearby streets of Plaka.

📖

Full description

Built by the Romans between 19 and 11 BC, the Roman Agora served as Athens' commercial centre once the older Greek agora had filled up. What remains today includes a row of columns and the octagonal Tower of the Winds, a weather-vane and water-clock structure that stands out among the ruins.

The site is compact and sits sunk below street level, so much of it can be seen from the railings, though entry is charged separately from the Acropolis. Resident cats add to the atmosphere.

It suits a short stop of around 30 minutes combined with a walk through the Plaka.

Good to know

  • much of the ruin is visible from the fence if you only want a quick look
  • the entrance fee is separate from the Acropolis ticket, so confirm what your pass covers.

Reviews

Not much to see here anymore but the ruins of course. It was closed when we were there. But it is very visible from the gate. There were cats by the gate and we saw someone brought food for them. How nice! Hadrian's Library is also nearby.
