Hadrian's Library

Explore Hadrian's Library, a Roman learning centre beside Monastiraki. Walk the foundations of its courtyard and reading halls and study the surviving colonnade that hints at its original scale.

📖

Full description

Hadrian's Library was a monumental complex built in 132 CE that served as a centre of learning, with reading rooms, lecture spaces and storage for thousands of scrolls around a large courtyard. Today the site consists of a surviving colonnaded facade, foundation lines and scattered architectural fragments.

Reviewers say there is not a great deal standing inside, but its position next to Monastiraki makes the contrast between ancient stone and busy streets striking. It takes about half an hour and fits easily into a walk around the historic centre.
