Monastiraki

Dive into Monastiraki, where the square, the flea market and the Acropolis all collide. Browse stalls along Adrianou and Ifestou streets, then head up to a rooftop terrace for views of the lit-up Parthenon.

📖

Full description

Monastiraki is one of Athens' busiest and most photographed districts, spread around the square of the same name and its metro station. The square is framed by the 18th-century Tzistarakis Mosque and the ruins of Hadrian's Library, with the Acropolis rising overhead.

Streets leading off it hold the flea market, souvenir shops, leather and craft stalls, and a dense run of souvlaki counters, cafés and bars. Rooftop terraces offer close views of the Parthenon, especially atmospheric at dusk.

Expect crowds and noise, which are part of the energy here.
