Erechtheion

4.8 ·

Stop at the Erechtheion, the most unusual temple on the Acropolis. Look closely at the six Caryatids holding up its porch and the uneven design that sets it apart from the Parthenon.

📖

Full description

The Erechtheion is an asymmetrical Ionic temple on the north side of the Acropolis, dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon and built on ground linked to their mythical contest. Its best-known feature is the Porch of the Caryatids, where six sculpted female figures replace columns.

Visitors reach it as part of the Acropolis visit, so it needs only a short stop of around fifteen minutes, but reviewers call it one of the most distinctive buildings on the hill. Crowds gather at the porch, though viewpoints for photos remain plentiful.

Reviews

The most stunning and amazing sight of the Acropolis. In spite of the crowds, still plenty of good places for photos and to view at your leisure. Beautifully preserved / restored.
