Anafiotika

Slip into Anafiotika, the island-style hamlet hidden beneath the Acropolis. Climb whitewashed stairways between blue shutters and bougainvillea, pausing at corners where the rock looms above and Athens spreads out below.

📖

Full description

Anafiotika is a small cluster of narrow lanes and low whitewashed houses on the north slope of the Acropolis, built by workers from the island of Anafi who came to Athens to help construct the royal palace. The look is pure Cycladic: blue shutters, bougainvillea spilling over walls, potted plants on steps, and cats dozing in doorways.

Many residents still live here, so the quiet, village-like mood is part of the draw. The maze of stairways is compact and easy to cover in under an hour, with glimpses of the rock above and the city below.
