The Hofburg is a vast complex of palace wings, squares, courtyards and gardens that served as the seat of Habsburg power for centuries. Inside, ornate baroque interiors, the imperial apartments and a silver collection show how the court lived.

Visitors can also simply wander the open grounds, which reviewers describe as easy to get lost in because of the sheer scale. Leave at least 90 minutes to see the paid sections properly, longer if you want to take in the gardens.

It is a natural anchor for a day in the Innere Stadt.
