State Hall of the Austrian National Library

4.6 ·

Step inside the State Hall of the Austrian National Library, where Baroque grandeur meets half a millennium of books. Wander beneath the ceiling frescoes and along the historic shelves in a visit of roughly 45 minutes.

📖

Full description

Visitors come to the Prunksaal less to read than to look: it is a Baroque hall lined with historic volumes beneath a frescoed ceiling, more book museum than working library. Reviewers describe an interior that keeps people looking up and around for the whole visit, with books spanning more than five centuries.

The library's wider holdings run from handwritten manuscripts to modern titles, stored above ground and three floors below it, and the complex also includes papyrus and globe collections. A typical visit takes around 45 minutes, with low walking effort and tickets that many guests report buying on the day without a long wait.

Reviews

The Austrian National Library was magnificent. The interior is very beautiful and you are in aw the whole time. We didn't book our tickets in advance but there was no wait and the process of buying ticket was very easy. You must visit it if you go to Vienna.
