The Appian Way was Rome's first great road, built in 312 BC to connect the city to the south, and its surviving stretches outside the modern centre are lined with tombs, catacombs and countryside far removed from the crowds around the Colosseum. Covering the distance by e-bike over roughly six hours makes it possible to reach the aqueduct ruins and quieter catacombs that a walking tour couldn't manage in the same time.
