Landmark
What looks like a fairly standard medieval basilica at street level opens, via a staircase inside, onto an excavated earlier church below, and then further down onto Roman-era rooms including an ancient temple to Mithras with its altar still in place. This vertical excavation, with underground water still audibly flowing at the lowest level, makes it one of the clearest illustrations anywhere of how modern Rome is literally built on its own past. Ground-level entry is free, while access to the excavated lower levels requires a ticket. It's a favorite among visitors who want real depth, in every sense, rather than another single-era church.

What people say
"You can buy tickets online or inside at the ticket counter (enter the basilica & go to the right). We The tickets are timed entry, & we missed our first time so repurchased a second time slot and this site is definitely worth the price of double entry. It is a self guided tour with information stands throughout the structure in English & Italian. It’s three levels between the current Basilica, ancient medieval church & ancient Roman ruins & pagan temple. No photos allowed inside but oh so cool. It’s a really easy walk to see/tour the Colosseum and then come visit the Basilica of San Clemente next."
