Boukoleon Palace

4.3 ·

Look up at Boukoleon Palace, the arched seaside ruin of a Byzantine imperial residence. In around 15 minutes you can view its weathered facade from the shoreline road beside the railway.

📖

Full description

Boukoleon Palace was a seaside residence belonging to the Great Palace complex of the Byzantine emperors, and its surviving facade of tall arches still stands on the Marmara shoreline. The site is currently closed to the public, though it can be seen reasonably well from the walking and cycling road that runs alongside the railway.

Reviewers mention that guided municipal tours have been organised periodically for Turkish citizens and residents. Because most visitors view it from outside, a stop here takes about 15 minutes and suits those who enjoy lesser-known Byzantine remains and photography of atmospheric ruins.
