Sokollu Mehmed Pasha Mosque

Discover Sokollu Mehmed Pasha Mosque, a Sinan masterpiece tucked into Kadırga away from the tour groups. Admire the Iznik tiles inside, then pause among the old graves in the adjoining cemetery.

📖

Full description

Designed by the architect Mimar Sinan for the Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha and completed around 1572, this mosque in the Kadırga district is prized for the Iznik tiles lining its interior walls. Reviewers call it a quieter alternative to the Blue Mosque for anyone wanting to see top-tier Ottoman architecture without the crowds.

A small cemetery with very old graves sits beside the building, and staff are described as friendly. Entry is free, visits run around 20 minutes, and it fits easily into a morning in the old city.

Reviews

Stumbled upon this mosque while we were walking towards Sultan square. It is hard to understand what beauty is inside. We were surprised to see the massiveness. The iznik titles made the interior of the mosque dome pop from the outside simpleness. Must visit and study the history too.
