Cistern of Theodosius

4.4 ·

Step down into the Cistern of Theodosius, a 1,600-year-old Byzantine reservoir hidden beneath Fatih. Wander among its columns, brick domes and arches as the hourly light show brings the vaults to life.

📖

Full description

Also known as the Serefiye Cistern, this 5th-century Byzantine water reservoir sits beneath Fatih with brick domes, arches and rows of columns. It is considerably smaller than the Basilica Cistern, and reviewers value it as a quieter, cheaper alternative with the same underground atmosphere.

Inside, a light show with music plays every hour, and the interior stays pleasantly cool on hot days. A visit takes about 30 minutes, with opening hours running from 10:00 to 22:00, making it an easy stop in the afternoon or evening.

Reviews

This was a pleasant visit, it was a very hot day when we visited (33°C) and it was lovely and cool inside. They have loud music with light shows, which comes on every hour. To me, the Basilica Cistern is more beautiful. This cistern is a lot smaller than the Basilica and I preferred the soothing music and calm…
