Binbirdirek Cistern

4.3 ·

Step down into Binbirdirek Cistern, the so-called Sunken Palace near the Hippodrome. In about 30 minutes you can wander among its Byzantine columns and see how the space now hosts exhibitions.

📖

Full description

Binbirdirek Cistern, often nicknamed the Sunken Palace, is a large Byzantine water tank dating to the Justinian era and located near the old Hippodrome. Its forest of stone columns creates an impressive interior, though the space is now used for exhibitions and events, which means lighting, cabling and art installations are part of the experience.

Reviewers note it is quieter than the Basilica Cistern but also point to the entrance price as a talking point. A visit takes about 30 minutes, and it appeals most to travellers who want a less crowded look at Constantinople's water infrastructure.

Reviews

Total rip off. Entrance is 20 euro's for a very small cistern. Compared to the Basilica Cistern a total disappointment. Historical atmosphere is ruined by lights, cables and some crappy art. In and out under 10 minutes. Avoid and save your money
