Little Hagia Sophia Mosque

4.7 ·

Step into Little Hagia Sophia, a 6th-century Byzantine church that now serves as a mosque. Trace its octagonal plan, columns and the carved imperial inscription, all in a setting far quieter than its famous namesake.

📖

Full description

Little Hagia Sophia is a former Byzantine church from the 6th century, built under Justinian and Theodora, whose names remain carved into the marble inscription around the interior. Its octagonal centre is organised by eight piers, with curved recesses and paired columns, and the Ottoman-era conversion added a distinct decorative layer.

Visitors often describe it as a hidden treasure compared with the famous landmarks nearby. Entry is free, and around 30 minutes is enough to take in the architecture.

It offers a calmer alternative to the busier sights in Sultanahmet and suits those interested in Byzantine design.
