First Cemetery of Athens

4.5 ·

Walk through the First Cemetery of Athens, an open-air gallery of marble sculpture. Pass ornate mausoleums and weathered tombs of notable Greeks along shaded paths just beyond the city centre.

📖

Full description

The First Cemetery of Athens opened in the 1830s and holds the graves of many prominent Greeks, marked by sculptures, elegant mausoleums and frescoes. The most striking marble works sit just beyond the main gate, while the cemetery climbs further back with quieter, shaded corners and benches.

It is free, large enough to need about an hour, and a short walk from the Plaka. Reviewers describe it as peaceful and easy to navigate, and as an under-visited stop for anyone interested in funerary art, history or a calm break from the crowded centre.

Reviews

Too many people miss the First Cemetery of Athens! Go see it! It is a quick walk from the Plaka area. I am a nerd when it comes to the Minoans, Mycenaeans, and ancient Greeks. Heinrich Schliemann is buried here. He was an amazing amateur archaeologist who broke with the stilted thinking of 19th century…
