Temple of Olympian Zeus

4.4 ·

Stand beneath the towering columns of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, once among the largest temples in Greece. Walk the grounds to judge the scale of the Corinthian shafts, with the Acropolis visible in the distance.

📖

Full description

The Temple of Olympian Zeus was one of the largest temples of the ancient world, started in the 6th century BC and finished centuries later under Roman rule. Only a number of tall Corinthian columns remain upright, but their height conveys the original scale well.

The site lies close to Hadrian's Arch and the centre, and the surrounding grounds are partly fenced and under works, which some reviewers found limiting. The exterior can be viewed from the street at any hour, while paid entry allows a closer walk among the columns.

Plan about 45 minutes inside.

Reviews

Seeing the Temple of Zeus in person gives you a completely different perspective than simply seeing it on TV or in picture. Walking around the site and taking in the history makes it easier to imagine what life may have been like back then. It is truly an amazing place to see, experience up close.
