Arch of Hadrian

4.6 ·

Step up to the Arch of Hadrian, a Roman gateway in the middle of modern Athens. Look through its marble opening toward the Acropolis and glimpse the Temple of Olympian Zeus nearby.

📖

Full description

The Arch of Hadrian is a Roman gateway of Pentelic marble that once separated the ancient Greek city from the quarter built under Emperor Hadrian. It stands beside a busy avenue near Zappeion Garden and can be seen at any hour, at no cost.

Looking through the arch, visitors frame the Acropolis on the hill beyond, and a short distance away the columns of the Temple of Olympian Zeus appear behind a fence. It is a quick stop, easily folded into a walk between the Plaka and the national gardens.

Reviews

A wonderful monument that you can access for free. Through the arch, you can look up the hill and see the Acropolis. And not far from the arch you have a view of the Temple of Zeus, through the fence. It can be crowded here as it is free for all to access.
