Discover San Nicolò dei Mendicoli, a church far from the crowds in western Dorsoduro. Spend twenty minutes among its ornaments and sculptures and leave a small donation to help preserve it.

📖

Full description

Tucked into a part of Venice far from the usual tourist flow, San Nicolò dei Mendicoli is widely described as the city's first church, with the current building dating from roughly the 12th century after several restorations. Only the bell tower survives from the original structure.

Inside, visitors find carved ornaments, sculptures and a warm, lived-in atmosphere that reviewers contrast with its plain exterior. Entry is free, though donations help maintain the building, so carrying some small change is useful.

A visit takes about 20 minutes.

Reviews

One of the most unusual and beautiful churches in Venice! Originally built in the 800's the current building dates from about 1100 to 1200 but has been"restored' several times. Well off the tourist path, you might be alone in this church!
