Testaccio Market

4.4 (8,870)Free

Located a bit farther from the historic center than most visitor markets, Testaccio Market serves a genuinely local clientele with stalls of fresh produce, meat, and prepared food, plus communal seating for eating on the spot. Its high local and hidden-gem scores against a more modest must-see rating reflect exactly this — a market discovered rather than promoted, and reviewers describe it as a wonderful spot precisely because it draws mostly Roman shoppers rather than tour groups. The relative distance from central Rome rewards those willing to make the trip, often paired with exploring the rest of the Testaccio neighborhood's food scene. It suits travelers curious about authentic, everyday Roman food culture.

What people say

"Because this market is located a bit further from the city center, it’s a wonderful spot where mostly locals shop. I came here twice and highly recommend renting a bike to get here rather than walking. There isn't too much else to do in the immediate area, so it's pretty much a "come here and go back" destination, but it is entirely worth the trip for the best real breakfast in the city! After enjoying a delicious breakfast, you can grab some incredible fresh fruits and head to any of the tables scattered around to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Another great feature is the separate section of the building filled with boutique clothing shops, which we absolutely loved buying from. Once you're satisfied, you can just bike right back to town. It is hands down the best combination of morning exercise and breakfast I can recommend!"
