Fontana dell'Acqua Paola

Completed in 1612 to mark the endpoint of a restored ancient Roman aqueduct, the fountain's grand triple-arched façade was partly built using marble scavenged from the Roman Forum and the original St. Peter's Basilica. Its position atop the Janiculum Hill gives it one of the best panoramic views in Rome, looking out over Trastevere and the historic center below. Being a genuine local favorite as much as a monument, it's often busy with Romans enjoying the terrace at sunset rather than tour groups. A quieter, view-focused alternative to the more crowded fountains in the city center.
