Yavuz Sultan Selim Mosque

4.9 ·

Climb to the Yavuz Sultan Selim Mosque for classic Ottoman architecture and a quiet hilltop setting. Admire the dome and minarets, then take in the Golden Horn views from the open terrace.

📖

Full description

Completed in 1522, the Yavuz Sultan Selim Mosque was built by Suleiman the Magnificent in memory of his father, Selim I. It stands on a hilltop in Fatih with a large dome, slender minarets and wide open space in front, from which reviewers describe views over the Golden Horn.

Visitors note a relaxed local atmosphere, with families and children using the terrace. Entry is free and a visit takes about twenty minutes, making it a calm alternative to Istanbul's busiest mosques.

It suits travellers who enjoy Ottoman architecture without the crowds.

Reviews

Gorgeous mosque that we stumbled upon. Children playing, laughing, and relaxing with families. A phenomenal view with lots of open space. It must be wonderful for the soul to be able to come here often to study and worship.
