Balat

Lose yourself in Balat, the Golden Horn's colour-washed hillside quarter. Wander steep cobbled lanes past painted houses, browse vintage shops, and settle into a café tucked among the old synagogues and churches.

📖

Full description

Balat is a hillside district on the Golden Horn known for its brightly painted, narrow-fronted houses stacked along steep cobbled lanes. Historically home to Jewish, Greek, and Armenian communities, it now mixes traditional corner shops and mosques, synagogues, and churches with vintage stores, ateliers, and trendy cafés.

Streets such as Kiremit Caddesi and the staircase-lined alleys reward wandering without a fixed plan. It is photogenic and relaxed, with a creative, slightly bohemian feel that contrasts with the busier historic peninsula nearby.
