Fener

Walk through Fener, the Golden Horn's historic Greek Orthodox quarter. Spot the red-brick Phanar College above the rooftops, pass small churches and the Patriarchate, and follow quiet lanes toward Balat.

📖

Full description

Fener is a hillside district on the Golden Horn, traditionally the centre of Istanbul's Greek Orthodox community and still home to the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Its dense streets hold old timber and stone houses, small churches, and the striking red-brick Phanar Greek Orthodox College towering over the neighbourhood.

It is quieter and more residential than neighbouring Balat, with a distinct historic and religious character. Walking its lanes gives a feel for layered Byzantine and Ottoman-era city life without a formal tourist circuit.
