Step inside Saint Stephen's, Istanbul's celebrated Iron Church on the Golden Horn. Admire the cast-iron structure and gilded dome, then continue on foot through the nearby Balat and Fener streets.

📖

Full description

Known locally as the Iron Church, Saint Stephen's stands on the Golden Horn shore in the Fener-Balat area and is unlike any other church in Istanbul: its structure is made of cast iron, with ornate detailing and a gilded dome catching the light off the water. Visitors describe a peaceful, uncrowded interior and a calm atmosphere compared with the city's major religious sites.

Entry is free and a visit takes only 15 to 20 minutes, which makes it an easy add-on to a neighbourhood walk rather than a half-day commitment.

A truly unique and beautiful church with impressive architecture and a peaceful atmosphere. The iron structure and intricate details make it unlike any other church in Istanbul. It’s well worth a visit, especially if you appreciate history, architecture, and quiet places away from the crowds.
