Gül Camii

4.5 ·

Look into Gül Camii, a small Istanbul mosque built on the site of an old Byzantine structure. Spend fifteen minutes seeing the modest building that reflects the city's layered past.

📖

Full description

Gül Camii is a compact mosque whose roots go back to a Byzantine structure from around the 10th or 11th century, believed to be named Hagia Theodosia, and converted to a mosque in 1499. It is a short, free stop of about fifteen minutes, best for visitors drawn to layered Byzantine and Ottoman history rather than grand interiors.

Reviewer experiences vary on access: the door may appear closed, but the way in is reportedly through the ablution room just across from the entrance, where you can ask to have it opened. Expect a quiet, modest visit.
