Aqueduct of Valens

4.6 ·

Walk beneath the Aqueduct of Valens, the Roman arches that still stride across one of Istanbul's busiest boulevards. In about 15 minutes you can stroll along its length and photograph the stonework from the neighbouring parks.

📖

Full description

The Aqueduct of Valens once carried water to Constantinople and today stands as one of the city's most recognisable pieces of Roman engineering, its tall stone arches striding right across a major boulevard. It is a viewing stop rather than a long visit: most people spend around 15 minutes walking beneath and alongside the arches, photographing them, and appreciating how a structure nearly 1,700 years old still dominates a modern traffic artery.

The site is open around the clock and free, and the adjacent parks make it easy to step back and see the full span. Reviewers highlight both the engineering and how well it frames the surrounding cityscape.

Good to know

  • Walk rather than drive, as parking means using the adjacent parks
  • visit in the evening when the arches are lit against the sky
  • combine it with nearby sights since it takes only a short while to see.

Reviews

Take a walk to the Acqueduct of Valens. You could drive though you would have to park at the adjacent parks. You will be mesmerised about the Roman engineering that built this acqueduct about 1700 years ago, and a good portion of it is still standing. You can walk along the length of it up the roads.
