Molla Zeyrek Mosque

4.8 ·

Climb to Molla Zeyrek Mosque, a former Byzantine monastery church tucked into a lived-in Istanbul neighbourhood. Study the medieval brickwork and layered history, then take in the everyday local life around it.

📖

Full description

Molla Zeyrek Mosque dates from the 12th century and was originally the Byzantine Monastery of Pantokrator, later converted into a mosque. It is regarded as a fine example of medieval Byzantine architecture and sits on a hillside, so reaching it involves a short climb through the surrounding streets.

Visitors note that the area around it feels lived-in, with children playing football and locals outdoors, rather than staged for tourists. The grounds are open around the clock, and a stop typically takes about 20 minutes, suiting those who like their history away from the main sightseeing circuit.

Reviews

A remarkable structure emanating rich history. The ascent filled me with exuberance and upon arrival I could see the Mosque and surrounding area was teeming with life! Children playing football, outdoor lessons being held, cafes being run, and worshippers submitting.
