Seek out Kalenderhane Mosque, one of Istanbul's quietest historical secrets. Step inside this converted Byzantine church and look for the architectural traces of its earlier life, all without the crowds of the big-name sights.

📖

Full description

Kalenderhane Mosque is a lesser-known Istanbul landmark that began as a Byzantine church before being converted to a mosque, and visitors regularly describe it as a hidden gem that deserves more attention. Its earlier church origins remain readable in the architecture, which makes it rewarding for anyone interested in how the city's monuments changed over time.

Because it sits away from the main sightseeing circuit, it tends to be quiet and easy to visit in around 20 minutes. Entry is free, and it pairs well with a walk through the surrounding old-city neighbourhoods.

Reviews

Very beautiful mosque that appears to have been converted historically from a church. In my opinion, this place should be promoted more for tourism and invested in for on-going upkeep. Having guided tours would also be a big plus to shed light on its history and to keep the tourists visits in proper order when prayers…
