San Frediano is an Oltrarno district with a working-class heritage, long associated with artisans, small workshops, and neighbourhood trattorias. Its streets are quieter and more residential than the central tourist zone, and the area comes into its own in the late afternoon and evening, when bars and restaurants fill with locals.

It makes a good walking area of about 75 minutes, mixing workshop doorways, the dome of the Cestello church, and an easygoing, couples-friendly atmosphere.
