4.6 ·

Stop at Porta San Niccolò, the most intact medieval gate left in Florence. Admire its Gothic tower, then continue up the hill toward Piazzale Michelangelo.

📖

Full description

Porta San Niccolò was built around 1324 in the late Gothic style as part of the southern section of Florence's medieval walls, and reviewers consider it the best-preserved gate of the circuit. The tall stone tower-gate rises over the road on the way up to Piazzale Michelangelo, and its crenellated top gives a different view of the city.

It is an easy detour while walking along the Arno, and suits couples and anyone interested in medieval architecture. Allow about 15 minutes, free of charge.
