Fountain of King Matthias

4.8 ·

Pause at the Fountain of King Matthias in the Buda Castle courtyard. Study the dramatic bronze hunting scene and its fine sculptural detail before exploring the nearby palace gardens.

📖

Full description

Found in a courtyard of the Buda Castle complex, the Fountain of King Matthias is a monumental bronze group by sculptor Alajos Stróbl. It shows the Renaissance king, Matthias Corvinus, dressed for the hunt with a crossbow, surrounded by hounds and a fallen stag, with a figure often identified as the maiden Ilonka nearby.

The scene is rich in narrative detail and rewards a slow look from several angles. It is free to view and sits close to the palace gardens and terraces, so it slots easily into a walk around the castle district.
