Climb to Buda Castle, the great palace crowning the hill above the Danube. Wander its terraces and courtyards, take in the river views, and step inside for the National Gallery's collections.

📖

Full description

Buda Castle is the palatial ensemble that dominates Castle Hill above the Danube, and it is home to the Hungarian National Gallery with displays ranging from Gothic altars to sculpture. The district around it is open at all hours and free to wander, with terraces, courtyards and sweeping city views that reward a slow visit.

Many people ride the historic funicular up and take the elevators or stairs for the rest, while reviewers highlight the architecture as one of the high points of a Budapest trip. Allow about two hours to explore the grounds and nearby sights.

Reviews

A must-see when in Budapest. I spent over six hours there (15 minutes trying to figure out how to get out 😅). Exhibits are interesting, organized, relevant, and portray the history of Hungary very well. Excellent views of the city. Be prepared to do a LOT of walking and climbing stairs. Elevators are available.…
