Explore the Budapest History Museum inside the Buda Castle palace, where the city's story unfolds room by room. Follow the timeline from Roman times to today and linger in the first-floor 'Light and Shadows' exhibition.

📖

Full description

Housed in the Buda Castle palace, this museum tells the story of Budapest across the centuries, from the Roman period through the medieval and modern eras. The exhibitions are spread over several levels, including a basement, and reviewers single out the 'Light and Shadows' exhibition on the first floor as an especially well-told account of the city's history.

Opinions vary on the layout, with some finding it slightly disorganised, so a little patience helps. The palatial setting adds atmosphere to a visit on Castle Hill.

Reviews

Fantastic museum, so much to see covering many different periods of Budapest's history. They also had a (temporary?) exhibition about the space race, and the role which Hungary and other Eastern Bloc countries contributed to the Soviet Union's efforts. Very interesting museum which will keep you occupied for hours.
