Museu Frederic Marès

4.5 (2,825)$ · Budget-friendly

Sculptor Frederic Marès's personal collection fills a Gothic palace tucked beside Barcelona Cathedral, mixing serious medieval and Romanesque sculpture with an eccentric hoard of everyday objects — fans, keys, postcards, toys — that Marès accumulated over his lifetime. A perfect culture score and 4.5-star rating reflect how consistently visitors describe it as an underrated highlight of the Gothic Quarter, and free entry on Sunday afternoons makes it an easy add to a cathedral-area walk. Its budget-friendly price the rest of the week only adds to the appeal. The combination of serious art and idiosyncratic personal collecting gives it a character few other Barcelona museums share.

What people say

"Visited this very unique museum on a Sunday when the entrance is free but the entrance fee in general is really affordable and you should check it out no matter what day it is. 😊 I was a bit surprised by the lower floor which was very religious, but the other two floors tell a completely different story – there are incredible collections of so many interesting things such as pipes, shell bouquets, dolls, clocks, pictures, and even the sculpture section of the founder himself. Very unique and I'm so glad we stumbled upon it!"
