Cathedral of Barcelona

4.6 (84,526)$ · Budget-friendly

Built mainly between the 13th and 15th centuries over an earlier Romanesque church, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia anchors the Gothic Quarter with soaring vaulted ceilings and a neo-Gothic façade added much later, in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its cloister is one of the more unusual features of any European cathedral, housing thirteen white geese, said to represent the age of Saint Eulalia at her martyrdom, alongside a lush garden of palm trees and magnolias. The rooftop terrace, reached by elevator, offers a close-up view over the Gothic Quarter's rooftops. Entry is free during certain hours and reduced-price otherwise, making it accessible on nearly any budget.

✨ Reasons to go

  • 1The cloister keeps thirteen white geese, one for each year of Saint Eulalia's life at her martyrdom.
  • 2Construction spanned the 13th to 15th centuries, but the neo-Gothic main façade was only added in the 19th and 20th centuries.
  • 3A rooftop terrace reached by elevator gives close-up views over the Gothic Quarter's rooftops.

💡 Good to know

  • 1Visit during the free entry windows, typically early morning or evening, to avoid the entrance fee charged at other times
  • 2don't miss the cloister and its resident geese, easy to walk past
  • 3add the rooftop terrace ticket for views over the Gothic Quarter.

What people say

"Simply amazing church! Absolutely stunning archtecture inside and out, and breathtaking art inside. This place really takes you back with how grand and magnificent it is, and just how much architectural detail went into building it. If you time it right, you can also catch the organ. One of the most amazing churches I have been to anywhere really. Unlike some other European churches this one has a 15€ cover, which is a bit of a bummer, but definitely still worth it!"
