📖

Full description

The National Observatory of Athens, founded in 1842, runs a visitor centre in the Sina building on the Hill of the Nymphs near Thissio. Guided tours cover the Geoastrophysics Museum and the historic telescopes, including the large instrument under its dome, and visitors praise the clear explanations, especially for astronomy history enthusiasts.

The setting offers wide views over Athens, and the walk uphill is part of the experience. Visits are timed to the evening and booked in advance, and reviewers suggest taking care in the dim paths around the telescope.

Reviews

Good walk up the hill to get to the building - which is mostly lit, although we managed to get list in the vicinity of the large telescope. Really good for astronomy history buffs and excellent explanations of the use of early telescopes for time setting and navigation. The big black dog is a bonus ! As was seeing…
