Kerameikos Archaeological Site

4.4 ·

Walk through Kerameikos, the ancient cemetery and potters' quarter on the edge of the historic centre. Follow the paths past carved grave markers and city wall remains, then step into the museum to see objects found in the tombs.

📖

Full description

Kerameikos was the potters' quarter and the main burial ground of ancient Athens, and today it is a large, green archaeological site with funerary monuments, sculpted gravestones and stretches of the old city walls. A small museum on site displays objects recovered from the tombs.

Reviewers note it sits a little further from the Acropolis than other major sites but is easy to reach, and that it feels distinct from the others on the combined ticket. The cemetery is pleasant to walk through, and a 45-minute visit covers it comfortably.

Reviews

Very worth visiting if you have the combo ticket. The site is a ruins of an ancient pottery town, there's plenty of interesting stuff around to see. I particularly enjoyed the area that is filled with ancient tombs. There's also a museum on site that you can visit for no extra charges. It's filled with interesting…
