Portuguese Synagogue of Amsterdam

4.5 ·

Step into the Portuguese Synagogue, a 1675 landmark that still serves its congregation. Walk beneath its chandeliers with the audio guide and visit the treasury of ceremonial objects.

📖

Full description

Completed in 1675, the Portuguese Synagogue is one of the oldest synagogues in Europe and remains in active use. Its large, light-filled interior is lit by many candles and an elegant chandelier, and the building is well maintained.

Visitors receive a multilingual audio guide included in the ticket, which reviewers find informative, and there is also a treasury section holding ceremonial objects. Some visitors noted the stairs to the women's gallery were poorly kept.

Allow around 45 minutes, and note that it is closed on Saturdays.

Reviews

One of the oldest synagogues in Europe. They have a good multilingual audio guide included in the price that has very informative description. There is another section that is the treasury that stores the artifacts from years ago. Good clean bathrooms. One hour is good to complete the visit
