Explore the Jewish Museum in Amsterdam-Centrum, which tells the story of Dutch Jewish life. See ceremonial silverware, handwritten scrolls and prayer books, then consider the synagogue across the road.

📖

Full description

The Jewish Museum in Amsterdam-Centrum presents the history of Jews in the Netherlands and its former colonies through artworks, ceremonial items and documents. Reviewers mention exquisite silverware, handwritten scrolls and prayer books dating back to the 1600s, alongside an account of how Jewish communities arrived from Portugal and Spain.

It is not a vast museum, and some find the overview of the period since 1850 fairly brief. The nearby synagogue across the road is often visited in the same outing, which adds context to the collection.

Reviews

We visited this week and found this plus the synagogue across the road fascinating experience. We visited it because it came up on a previous visitor’s top 10 Amsterdam visits. I do think more should be done to promote this to increase visitors knowledge of this museum
