San Marco

Walk into San Marco, the monumental core of Venice. Cross Piazza San Marco beneath the Basilica and Campanile, then wander the lanes beyond toward the Grand Canal while the crowds thin.

📖

Full description

San Marco is the political and ceremonial heart of Venice and its most visited district. Piazza San Marco is framed by the Basilica, the Campanile, and the arcaded Procuratie, with the Doge's Palace and the Bridge of Sighs beside it.

Beyond the square, narrow lanes lead past theatres, luxury shops, and hotels toward the Rialto and the Grand Canal. The district is busiest in the middle of the day, so it rewards visits at the edges of the day.

After dark, the square empties and the lit façades take on a calmer, more atmospheric character.
