Pigneto was a poor, semi-rural outskirt when filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini used its streets as the setting for his early neorealist films in the 1960s, and that gritty, unpolished character has since been reclaimed by artists, musicians, and a wave of independent bars along its pedestrianised main strip, Via del Pigneto. The area still has a rougher, more working-class feel than central Rome's tourist districts, which is a large part of its appeal to a younger, more alternative crowd.

It's known today as one of Rome's best neighbourhoods for aperitivo and live music rather than for any single sight. Its low profile with tourists keeps prices lower and the atmosphere more genuinely local.
