Museo della Forma Urbis

4.4 ·

Step into a quiet museum near the Caelian Hill and come face to face with fragments of the Forma Urbis, an enormous 3rd-century marble map of ancient Rome. Study the carved stone pieces that once charted every building in the city, a niche find best appreciated with some context beforehand.

✨

Reasons to go

  • Houses surviving fragments of the Severan Marble Plan, a giant 3rd-century AD marble map that once depicted every building in ancient Rome
  • The original plan covered an entire wall, making these fragments rare physical remnants of a full-scale ancient city map
  • Includes an outdoor section with engraved BC-era gravestones alongside the marble map fragments
📖

Full description

This little-known museum houses surviving pieces of the Forma Urbis Romae, a vast marble plan of ancient Rome carved in the early 3rd century AD that once covered an entire wall and mapped the city's every structure in astonishing detail. Most visitors discover it by chance or through a guide rather than by seeking it out directly, and reviewers describe genuine surprise at encountering an artifact of this historical significance in such a low-key setting.

Its low must-see score paired with a notably high hidden-gem rating captures that dynamic precisely - a niche but remarkable find for those who make the walk, though others report finding little more than a single sparsely furnished room for the ticket price. A 4.4 rating suggests satisfaction depends heavily on prior awareness of what the plan actually represents.

💡

Good to know

  • Read up on the Severan Marble Plan before visiting to appreciate what you're seeing
  • keep expectations modest - it's essentially one room
  • a good add-on to a Colosseum or Celian Hill walk rather than a standalone trip.

Reviews

A really fascinating surprise. Knew nothing of this map before our guide for the Colosseum told us about it and I am so pleased we went to see it. An incredible artefact. Also worth noting is the very lovely cafe opposite which was a retreat from the crowds
