Palatine Hill

Archaeological digs on the Palatine have uncovered Iron Age huts that fit the founding myth almost too neatly, and the hill later became the address of choice for emperors, whose sprawling palace ruins — the word 'palace' itself derives from Palatium — still dominate the site. Views down over the Roman Forum on one side and the Circus Maximus on the other make it one of the most rewarding vantage points in the city, especially combined with a Forum and Colosseum ticket.

It takes real walking and some shade-free stretches, so it's a fuller commitment than a typical piazza stop. History-minded visitors get the most out of it, ideally with a guide or audio guide to make sense of the fragmented ruins.
