When funds ran short for an actual dome, the Jesuits commissioned painter Andrea Pozzo to create one in trompe l'oeil on the flat ceiling in the late 17th century — an illusion so effective from the marked spot on the floor that it fools most first-time visitors completely. The nave ceiling carries a similarly dramatic painted perspective depicting the missionary work of Saint Ignatius.

It's free, centrally located near the Pantheon, and takes only a few minutes, yet consistently surprises people who weren't expecting the trick. A must for anyone interested in Baroque illusionism.
