Basilica of Saint Mary of Minerva

Constructed by Dominican friars in the 13th century atop the ruins of a temple dedicated to Minerva, the church is a rare pocket of Gothic architecture in a city otherwise dominated by Baroque and Renaissance styles. Inside, it holds the tomb of Saint Catherine of Siena and a Michelangelo sculpture, Christ the Redeemer, near the altar.

Outside, Bernini's playful sculpture of an elephant carrying a small Egyptian obelisk on its back has become a beloved city landmark in its own right. It's a quiet, contemplative stop just steps from the Pantheon, appealing to visitors who want art and history without the crowds.
