Landmark
While most visitors stop only at the portico to photograph the Bocca della Verità set into its wall, the church itself dates back over a thousand years and preserves some of Rome's finest Cosmatesque marble flooring and an elegant Romanesque bell tower. Its relatively unadorned, early-medieval character stands in contrast to the heavily Baroque churches found elsewhere in the city center. Because so many visitors leave after the keyhole-mask photo, the interior stays noticeably calmer even during busy hours outside. It's worth the extra few minutes for anyone who's already made the stop for the Mouth of Truth.

What people say
"Santa Maria in Cosmedin is much more than just the church that houses the famous Mouth of Truth. In fact, after taking your photo with the Bocca della Verità, you have to walk through the church to exit, so every visitor gets the chance to admire this beautiful historic building. Admission is completely free, although donations are welcomed to help maintain the church. The church itself is peaceful and surprisingly beautiful inside. After the crowds around the Mouth of Truth, stepping into the quiet interior feels like a welcome change. The architecture is elegant, the atmosphere is calm, and it’s well worth taking a few extra minutes to look around instead of rushing straight out. One practical tip: if you’re visiting the Mouth of Truth, try to arrive early in the morning. The queue can become quite long later in the day, especially during the tourist season. Once you’ve had your photo, you’ll naturally continue through Santa Maria in Cosmedin before leaving the site. Overall, this is a place where history, legend, and architecture come together. Many people come only for the famous stone mask, but the church deserves attention in its own right. Since entry is free, it’s an experience that shouldn’t be missed when visiting this part of Rome. It’s a peaceful and historic stop that adds even more value to one of the city’s most famous attractions."
