Saints Peter & Paul Basilica

4.8 ·

Step into the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul at Vyšehrad. Look up at the painted ceilings, mosaics and stained glass of this neo-Gothic church, then walk to the river viewpoints outside.

📖

Full description

The Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul dominates the Vyšehrad skyline with its twin towers and late 19th-century neo-Gothic architecture. Inside, the decorative scheme is the main attraction: colourful frescoes, carvings, mosaics and stained-glass windows cover walls and ceilings in dense detail.

Reviewers describe a peaceful interior, though it can already be busy on weekday mornings in summer, and note that there is an admission charge for entry. The riverside area nearby offers views of the Vltava and the bridge, making the basilica a natural pairing with a walk around the Vyšehrad grounds over roughly 30 minutes.

Reviews

There is an admission charge. I visited on a weekday morning in August and it was already quite busy. I’d recommend it as you can see views of the city and the bridge from the riverside nearby. The cemetery right next to it contains the graves of some famous people, so it’s worth popping in.
